Ask three installers what an air source heat pump costs and you may well get three very different answers, because the pump itself is often the smaller part of the bill. For a typical three bedroom home in South Yorkshire, a fully installed air source heat pump system usually lands somewhere between £10,000 and £16,000 before any grant is applied. A smaller, well insulated property with a straightforward layout can come in under that. A large or poorly insulated house needing significant pipework changes can go beyond it.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is deducted by the installer, not claimed back by you, so the figure you actually pay is normally in the £3,000 to £9,000 bracket. Always ask for the quote to show the full price and the grant separately, so you can compare like with like.
The single biggest variable is heat loss. A heat pump runs at a lower flow temperature than a gas boiler, usually around 45 to 50 degrees rather than 70, so radiators have to be larger to give out the same warmth. A proper room by room heat loss survey tells you how many radiators genuinely need changing, and it is normal for that to be some of them rather than all of them.
Solid stone and solid brick properties, common in the older parts of Barnsley and the surrounding villages, lose more heat than cavity walled homes, which pushes both the pump size and the radiator work upwards. Loft insulation topped up to current depth is one of the cheapest ways to bring a quote down before work starts.
Location of the outdoor unit matters too. A straight run from the unit to the cylinder is cheap. Running pipework around the outside of the house, through a conservatory, or lifting floors in a terrace adds labour and materials.
Some items are not always visible in a headline price. Ask specifically whether they are included, because a quote that omits them is not really cheaper.
An electrical supply upgrade is the one that catches people out most often. Many older homes have a consumer unit or incoming supply that needs attention before a heat pump can be added, and in some cases Northern Powergrid needs to be involved.
Running cost depends almost entirely on how well the system is designed and set up. A well commissioned system in a reasonably insulated Yorkshire home will typically deliver around three to four units of heat per unit of electricity across the year. On current tariffs that puts annual heating and hot water costs broadly in the same territory as gas, sometimes a little below, sometimes a little above.
A heat pump on an off peak electricity tariff usually works out cheaper to run than gas. A poorly designed one running at high flow temperatures because the radiators are undersized will cost noticeably more. That is why the survey stage is worth more attention than the brand of pump.
Budget around £150 to £250 a year for a service, and expect a 15 to 20 year life from a good quality unit with the cylinder likely lasting longer.
If your boiler is reliable and only a few years old, there is usually no financial urgency to switch. The better time to plan is when the boiler is nearing the end of its life, because you can then use the survey period to sort insulation and radiator sizing without pressure.
