If you keep finding the pressure gauge on your boiler sitting below 1 bar, you are not imagining it and you are not alone. A sealed heating system should hold its pressure for months at a time, so a boiler that needs topping up every week or two is telling you something is escaping somewhere. Here is what is usually behind it, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to get an engineer in.
Most modern combi and system boilers run happily between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is cold. When the system heats up, the water expands and the needle will rise a little, often to around 1.8 or 2 bar, then settle back down as it cools. That movement is normal.
What is not normal is the pressure creeping down over days or weeks until the boiler locks out, usually with an error code such as F1 on many Ideal models, F22 on Vaillant or E119 on Worcester Bosch, all common boilers in homes around Barnsley. Losing a small amount over several months is acceptable. Losing 0.5 bar in a week means water is leaving the system somewhere.
In our experience the cause is nearly always one of a handful of things, and some are far cheaper to put right than others. Small weeps at radiator valves and pipe joints are the most common culprit, and they often evaporate before you ever see a puddle, which is why people assume there is no leak.
Inside the boiler itself, a failed expansion vessel is a frequent offender, especially on boilers over eight to ten years old. The vessel contains an air charge that absorbs the expansion of hot water; when it loses that charge, the pressure spikes on heating and the safety valve dumps water outside through a small copper pipe on your outside wall. If that pipe drips, you have found your answer.
Before calling anyone, walk round every radiator with a piece of kitchen roll and run it around each valve and joint. Even a tiny weep will show as damp. Check under the boiler for staining, and look at the small pipe that comes through your outside wall near the boiler. If it is wet or dripping, the pressure relief valve is letting by or the expansion vessel has failed.
Topping the system back up through the filling loop is fine to do yourself, and your boiler manual or the manufacturer's website will show you how for your model. Repressurise to about 1.2 bar with the heating off. What you should not do is keep topping up week after week without finding the cause. Every top-up adds fresh, oxygenated water, which accelerates corrosion and sludge inside your radiators and can shorten the life of the boiler's heat exchanger.
If you are topping up more than once a month, or the pressure drops noticeably within a few days, it is worth getting it looked at. Anything involving the expansion vessel, pressure relief valve or internal components of the boiler must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, so always ask for their registration number and check it on the Gas Safe Register if you are unsure.
Costs depend on what is found. Recharging an expansion vessel is often a quick job done during a service visit, while replacing a pressure relief valve or an external expansion vessel typically runs to somewhere in the low hundreds of pounds including parts, depending on the boiler and access. A hidden leak under a floor is harder to price until it is traced, and on older systems in some of the stone terraces and pre-war semis around South Yorkshire, pipework under solid floors can make that a bigger job. A reputable local firm should diagnose first and give you a clear price before any work starts.
Low pressure itself is not dangerous, and the boiler will simply lock out to protect itself. The risk is longer term, since constant topping up causes corrosion and the underlying leak can damage floors, ceilings or the boiler if left.
A healthy sealed system should need topping up rarely, perhaps once or twice a year, often after bleeding radiators. Needing to do it weekly or even monthly points to a leak or a fault that wants finding.
